The highest court in the United States has paved the way for a tribal gaming venture in Texas, a move celebrated by American Gaming Systems (AGS). The court determined that the state of Texas cannot dictate to the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and the Alabama and Coushatta tribes regarding gambling activities on their sovereign lands. This ruling carries significant weight as Texas possesses some of the most stringent gambling regulations nationwide, with the exception of bingo. The tribes have consistently asserted their adherence to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), which empowers tribes to oversee gaming on their territories. AGS, a prominent provider of gaming devices, including those utilized in tribal enterprises, expressed understandable enthusiasm for the court’s decision. CEO David Lopez hailed it as a triumph for tribal self-governance, enabling these tribes to pursue financial independence and reaffirming their status as federally acknowledged tribes.
Lopez continued, “Our company supports the self-governing rights of our tribal allies and hopes they find prosperity in their present and upcoming business endeavors as independent nations within Texas.
“We are honored to stand with all our Indigenous partners throughout the country, particularly these tribes who have battled for economic freedom for many years.”
