The famed Churchill Downs Incorporated has agreed to acquire the storied Ellis Park, a Kentucky racetrack steeped in history, for a sum of $79 million. Their vision includes a significant renovation of the aging facility, coupled with the development of a brand-new entertainment destination in the adjacent city of Owensboro. This acquisition represents a pivotal moment for Kentucky’s horse racing landscape, as Churchill Downs, a powerhouse in the industry, is poised to inject new life into the sport through this investment. The state’s governor expressed immense enthusiasm, heralding the news as a positive development for all stakeholders.
Our entire group is fully committed to establishing a distinctive summer racing event at The Pea Patch. The goal is to retain more Kentucky-bred horses and regional trainers, allowing them to compete locally, while simultaneously attracting elite competitors from across the nation to the Bluegrass State throughout July and August.
This financial commitment will ensure that Kentucky equines and their handlers have access to the nation’s premier year-round racing schedule, all while generating employment opportunities throughout the state and surrounding areas,” Beshear continued. “Churchill Downs exhibits exemplary corporate citizenship and remains an indispensable component of Team Kentucky.
