Camelot Ends Legal Challenge as Allwyn Prepares to Assume UK National Lottery Operations

Camelot has retracted its lawsuit against Allwyn concerning the UK National Lottery.

Following the UK Gambling Commission’s selection of Allwyn to assume the UK National Lottery permit, Allwyn declared that Camelot had abandoned its legal contest.

Camelot, the current operator at the time, had instantly disputed the Gambling Commission’s resolution to grant Allwyn the fourth National Lottery license in March. They commenced legal actions against both Allwyn and the Gambling Commission, a maneuver that could have cost the UK government £600 million (or $693 million) in compensation if victorious.

Nevertheless, Allwyn has now verified that Camelot has ceased its legal dispute. In exchange, Allwyn has dismissed its counterclaim and relinquished any possible expenses Camelot might have accrued during the legal proceedings.

This progression clears the path for Allwyn to take charge of the National Lottery from Camelot and initiate the handover process. Camelot has been the administrator of the National Lottery since its commencement in 1994.

The permit, assessed to be valued at £6.4 billion over a decade, has been a point of contention and legal conflicts. Notably, Camelot had previously failed to secure the bid for the UK National Lottery in 2012 when Virgin Group was originally selected as the favored applicant for the third National Lottery license. However, due to legal measures pursued by Camelot, Virgin Group withdrew, and Camelot maintained control of the lottery in a subsequent selection procedure.

In this instance, Allwyn held firm, compelling Camelot to withdraw their legal action. They understood that Allwyn would not yield as readily as Virgin had.
