Sydneys theatrical landscape is alive with excitement as proposals for a new Broadway-caliber venue at The Star Entertainment Group’s gaming complex advance. Although the City of Sydney rescinded its concerns in December, the ultimate verdict lies with the autonomous Planning Commission.
The envisioned development, already granted preliminary consent by the Department of Planning, entails overhauling The Star’s current 4,000-capacity Event Centre. Spearheading the endeavor is Stephen Found, the theater magnate behind the Sydney Lyric and Capitol Theatres. His aspiration? A cutting-edge, 1,550-seat, bi-level playhouse devoted to musical productions, accompanied by a 1,000-capacity space for modern music, humor, and variety shows.
This bold scheme pledges to infuse a vital dose of variety into the casino’s amusement options. Nevertheless, The Star’s Chief Executive, Robbie Cook, introduces a word of prudence. While highlighting the group’s dedication to enriching its entertainment and hospitality provisions, he emphasizes that these grand designs depend on attaining fiscal equilibrium.
Sydneys aspiration for a vibrant theater precinct akin to Broadway or London’s West End has encountered a slight obstacle. Their vision was to establish this new entertainment center around George Street and Haymarket, but progress has been stalled for a year. Given that construction is estimated to take two years, followed by an additional year for the completion of the elaborate interiors, it appears that the debut of this project won’t occur until late 2025 at the soonest.
