ACMA Blocks Two Offshore Gambling Websites

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is ordering internet service providers (ISPs) to prohibit access to two foreign gambling websites and is advising patrons of these brands to promptly retrieve their funds.

The ACMA will block two offshore gambling websites, Dinkum Pokies and Fortune Clock Casino, the most recent targets of a blocking order following numerous grievances about these operators, including withholding winnings and substandard treatment of players.

The agency conducted an investigation after receiving complaints and discovered that the websites were in violation of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

Since the ACMA initially introduced blocking requests in November 2019, 150 illicit gambling websites have been blocked. Since the agency began enforcing new regulations and penalties against offshore gambling in 2017, over 100 illegal operators have withdrawn from the Australian market.

Website blocking is considered a valuable opportunity to enhance public awareness of illegal gambling services through messages that appear when attempting to access the websites.

Any website found to be operating in violation of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, such as operating without a permit or offering casino-like games, is potentially subject to prohibition by the ACMA.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has issued a new directive, subsequent to the blocking of numerous websites throughout 2020. In January, nine websites were blocked, followed by eleven in July and eight in August.

In April, the New South Wales Office of Responsible Gambling (ORG) released a consumer alert to online gamblers in the state.

ORG Director Natalie Wright stated at the time: “If you are seeking to gamble online, you should only utilize services licensed in Australia as they provide consumer safeguards and responsible gambling alternatives, such as setting time and spending restrictions.”

“Foreign gambling websites are unlawful in Australia, and those who utilize them face greater hazards than those who employ licensed Australian operators.”
