Portugal’s Digital Gambling Revenue Reaches New High in Q3

Portugals digital wagering income achieved a new peak in the third quarter, reaching €215.3 million (£185.6 million/$235.4 million), driven by record figures in online betting.

Portugals digital gambling revenue reached a new high of €215.3 million in the third quarter, a 36.1% increase from €158.2 million in the same period of 2022. Total market revenue for the three months ending September 30, 2023, surpassed the second quarter’s €122 million by 4.6%.

Approximately €133.4 million in revenue originated from online games of chance in the third quarter, a 50.5% year-on-year increase. This represents a new segment record and accounts for 62.0% of all digital gambling revenue in the quarter.

Consumers spent €3.65 billion on this form of gambling in the third quarter, a 47.2% increase, another new high for Portugal. Slot machines accounted for 82.3% of total spending, French roulette for 6.4%, and blackjack for 6.2%.

Despite the overall increase in Portugals digital revenue, the sports betting market continues to decline.

Sports betting revenue in the third quarter was €81.9 million. This is 17.7% higher than the previous year, but 2.5% lower than the second quarter, marking the third consecutive quarter of decline.

The Portuguese Gaming Oversight and Inspection Agency (SRIJ) publicized its third-quarter statistics, revealing that internet gambling income expanded by 6.4%, with 2% originating from tennis and the remaining portion from other athletic pursuits.

The third-quarter data indicated that 196,600 individuals had voluntarily excluded themselves from online gambling by the conclusion of the quarter, representing a 42.5% surge compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

Concurrently, the quarter witnessed approximately 205,200 fresh online registrations. It was reported that 97,800 accounts were also terminated during the third quarter. At the termination of the three-month period, there were 3.9 million active online gambling accounts in Portugal.

Furthermore, the SRIJ stated that 23 websites were instructed to halt illicit operations in the third quarter.

Revenue from land-based gambling also experienced an uptick in Portugal.

In addition to internet gambling, income derived from the land-based gambling sector also ascended. During the third quarter, land-based gambling revenue attained €76.1 million, reflecting a 14.0% year-on-year increase.

Of this sum, €57.2 million originated from physical slot machines, marking a 1.0% rise from the equivalent period last year and accounting for 75.1% of total third-quarter revenue. The remaining €18.9 million stemmed from casino-style games and bingo, which exhibited a growth rate of 35.6%.

Baccarat wagering generated €5.9 million in revenue during the third quarter, American roulette €5.8 million, and blackjack €3.3 million.
